Pregnancy and Birth in Florence

You will need to do a certain amount of research when it comes to giving birth in Florence. There are a number of different hospitals where you can deliver, but each have very different policies. Some don’t give epidurals (or any sort of pain relief). Some separate mothers and babies at night - to given the mums a rest. You need to check too whether you will be on a large ward, or have the option of a private room afterwards. Most have open evenings, so it is worth giving them a call and visiting beforehand. Your decision will obviously be based on the type of labour you want, and which place feels best for you.

There are a huge number of yoga studios in Florence, usually they will organise pregnancy classes according to demand. Many will also offer individual classes

  • Careggi Hospital

    Recommended by Kirsten Hills

Centro Yoga Om, Vilanova i la Geltru Image

This is the biggest (and reputedly the best) hospital in Florence. Its size and proximity to the famous Meyer Children’s Hospital for some parents is a bonus. It has a brand new maternity unit.
It has its separate birthing unit- Margherita. This is a modern centre which opened some years ago- and is like a typical British/American birthing centre. It is quiet, modern and clean. There are water pools in each of the five rooms, partners can stay the night, but there is no pain relief. It feels like a hotel, but you must pass a medical assessment in order to give birth here.

    Comments:

"Its size can put off some parents, and remember it is a university hospital- so you may have a number of student doctors observing proceedings" (KH, Oct 2012)

    Comments:
(MP, Feb 2014)
