Founded in September 1992, the EIS was originally a project created by just 12 families and has subsequently grown considerably. Due to this growth, the school relocated to Villa Segafredo in the town of Rosà with more convenient transport links. In 2001 the EIS became part of the European Council of International Schools and in 2008 it changed the constitution of the school making it an non-profit trust, with all profits directly invested in the school. The location of the school, in a converted villa, gives it a relaxed, non-institutional feel and the local parks, cycle paths, sports centre and swimming pool are used regularly as part of the school programme.
